Random thought: art is one of those few activities in which our work on ourselves in manifested concretely for others to observe. That may be visible in technical virtuosity, reflecting physical and mental coordination, but for those that are most inspirational, it is also the internal work that is revealed.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art had a retrospective on Diebenkorn, charting his work from its volcanic origins to the final veiled meditations. When my sons and I came across a large collection of the latter in D.C. three years ago, I was engrossed, but they were barely polite in their impatience to move on.

Sometimes it’s the journey that inspires, rather than the product. I am nearing the end of Diebenkorn’s transformations, so they mean something to me. Nobody can express the artist’s journey for you, but many in the world may find self-understanding in your work.
